Morning Court: a Japanese maple beside a cedar-clad entry, with grasses and limestone paving

Morning Court

A sun-filled courtyard forming a quiet centre to an architecturally designed family home, connecting the living spaces with the established garden beyond.

Positioned to the north and east of the house, large cedar sliders open directly onto the courtyard, extending the interior into the landscape. A simple concrete terrace provides the foundation for outdoor living, softened by Northland limestone and generous planting along its edges.

The material palette responds to the warmth and natural tones of the architecture, with limestone, concrete and cedar creating a restrained framework for the garden. Carex, lavender and geranium bring texture and movement, while tāwhiri karo provides a native element within the planting.

The courtyard creates a considered transition between house and garden, intimate and sheltered while remaining connected to the larger, tree-lined backyard.
