Parnell Courtyard

A private courtyard conceived as an extension of the interior, bringing the house, garden and the client’s art collection into closer relationship.

The design follows the axis of the interior, drawing the garden into view from the front door and creating a strong connection through the house. Luiten Ortega designed the landscape in its entirety, including the fireplace, water feature, furniture selection and planting.

A layered palette of tī kōuka, tītoki, hydrangea, libertia and liriope creates a lush, enclosed garden with seasonal variation and softness around the architecture. The restrained material palette allows the planting, artworks and built elements to sit together as one composition.
