Pukekohe: stone paving through grasses in a family garden, south Auckland

Pukekohe

A family garden organised around a central courtyard, with a sequence of connected spaces that move between open lawn and more intimate planted areas.

The courtyard and fireplace form the social centre of the garden, creating a sheltered space for gathering that connects directly to the home. From here, the landscape extends around the house, with lawns providing openness and planting creating definition, enclosure and continuity between spaces.

A restrained palette of grasses, perennials and clipped forms gives the garden a natural but considered character. Miscanthus, lomandra and gaura bring movement through the planting, while buxus, phormium and carpinus provide structure and permanence. Seasonal planting adds variation without disrupting the simplicity of the overall composition.

The result is a generous landscape that supports family life while establishing a strong sense of order, rhythm and connection to the architecture.
