St Leonard's, Mount Eden: layered native planting and wharariki beside a lap pool

St Leonard’s

A native-focused garden shaped by the volcanic landscape of Maungawhau, building on an established garden to create a stronger connection between architecture and landscape.

Developed alongside the architecture from the outset, the landscape responds closely to the existing garden and the character of the site. The planting is deliberately restrained, using a palette selected to respond to the volcanic soil and drawing on the texture, form and seasonal variation of New Zealand’s native flora.

Oioi, toetoe and wharariki bring fine texture and movement, while shrubby tororaro and houpara provide structure through the garden. Nīkau introduce height and a distinctly Auckland character, establishing a layered landscape that sits comfortably within its established setting.

The planting extends the existing landscape while creating a considered transition between the architecture and its surroundings.
